Scientific Name: Calidris canutus Pic By: Mark
Family: Wader Size: 25cm

Description: The adult Red Knot has short dark legs and a medium thin dark bill. Their body is mottled gray on top with a reddish face, throat and breast. In the winter it is pale gray all over.

There are 6 subspecies of the knot, one of which is severely endangered. The American subspecies has been predicted to be extinct as early as 2010 due to overfishing of their primary food source – the horseshoe crab in the Delaware Bay, a primary stopover point for this migrating bird.

This bird visits the UK shores in the winter, migrating south to Africa, and the areas surrounding Australia.
